Shiplap sheds
The defining characteristic of shiplap cladding is the groove on the upper edge of each individual board which allows the next board to slot into it. This facilitates efficient water drainage and makes an airtight seal, significantly reducing the risk of draughts and moisture ingress. Shiplap sheds are an excellent choice if you plan on using your shed as a workshop or if you need to store more valuable items. Shiplap sheds are also visually appealing, with smooth exterior and interior surfaces. A high-quality finish elevates the overall aesthetics of your shed, giving it a more sophisticated, premium appearance.
Overlap sheds
The term ‘overlap cladding’ describes boards which overlap each other to create a rugged structure with rustic appeal. Overlapping enables rainwater to run off, making an effective barrier against the wet British climate, but although overlap sheds are watertight, they’re not airtight and so are vulnerable to dampness and draughts. Overlap cladding is the simplest construction method, enabling us to offer these sheds at a competitive price point. If you’re looking for a basic storage solution, an overlap shed is a great choice.
Cheap wooden sheds
Cheap wooden sheds don’t have to mean skimping on quality and longevity when you shop from the range here at Waltons. Not only are all our sheds built right here in the UK from sustainable sustainable and certified timber, but we also offer a 10-year anti-rot guarantee as standard. Workshop sheds
Using your shed as a workshop is a great way to create the workspace you’ve always coveted at a price that’s affordable. Wooden workshop sheds offer so much versatility – if you’re intending to use your shed for heavier tools and equipment, you can even purchase a floor upgrade to give you that extra strength you need.
Whether you intend to use your shed for storage, as a workshop, or plan to repurpose it as a hobby or craft room, you can be sure of finding the perfect shed to meet your requirements from the extensive ranges on offer here.

Wooden Sheds – more info
Wooden sheds cater for a range of diverse needs – from compact storage solutions to roomy work spaces. A wooden garden shed offers timeless and traditional appeal, emphasising natural aesthetics while still offering robust construction and security. Blending functionality and visual charm, wooden sheds provide an excellent solution for those looking to maximise their outdoor space. Whether you need a sturdy wooden bike shed, a stylish Dutch barn-style design or a workshop for your practical projects, this is where you’ll find it, along with plenty of other options.
How to build a wooden garden shed
The basic process for building a wooden shed is the same for any of the options available here.
- The first step is to prepare the area and base. You can get some tips on this by reading our guide to building a shed base.
- Next comes building the shed body. Start by securing the doors to the front gable end.
- Place the floor panel on the base and begin constructing the wooden body by attaching the rear gable to one of the side panels, forming an L shape.
- Add the second side and then secure the front gable.
- Construct the roof and cover it with felt. Add corner trims to the shed and attach fascia boards and finials.
- Finally, install the door fixings and windows to complete. You can read about the process in more detail in our guide to building a wooden shed.
How to insulate a wooden shed
To insulate your wooden shed:
- Start by filling the structural frame gaps with insulation material. Prioritise the walls, roof and if possible, the floor.
- Attach a breathable damp-proof membrane to the shed's inner cladding before insulating, following manufacturer’s guidelines. Basic bubble wrap offers cheap, if limited, insulation. Rockwool provides effective sound insulation but can be messy to work with. PIR insulation boards like Celotex and Kingspan are rigid, fibre-free, and relatively easy to install. Environmentally friendly wool insulation, such as Thermafleece, is a safe alternative.
- Once insulated, plywood, tongue and groove, or pallet boards are suitable for interior boarding depending on your shed's purpose.
How to damp proof a wooden shed
You can guard against damp and mould and preserve the longevity of your wooden shed by applying wood treatment every year. You should also ensure good ventilation by installing vents and regularly opening doors and windows to get the air flowing. Moisture can also be controlled by introducing heating solutions such as a tubular heater or professionally installed wood burner (with a carbon monoxide detector). You could also explore alternative options such as a solar-powered air heater. In humid conditions, consider a dehumidifier, particularly if your shed is situated on damp ground or in a rainy or coastal area. Find out more in our guide on how to damp-proof your shed.
