44mm log cabins - more info
Our 44mm log cabins offer the thickest log size available in the range. The dimensions and designs of these wooden cabins make them versatile enough for all kinds of work and leisure activity. Whether you’re looking for a place to chill, exercise, or get your work projects done in the tranquillity of your own garden, these log cabins will give you the opportunity to do so with maximum comfort all year round.
How to choose the right spot for your log cabin
It’s important to locate the best area in your garden to place your log cabin in order to make optimal use of the surroundings, as well as light, sun and shade. There’s also your garden aesthetic to consider. Here are some steps you can take to help you pinpoint the ideal spot:
- Start by marking out the dimensions of the cabin with tent pegs or canes.
- Consider a south-facing location for sun, especially if warmth is a priority. However, it might be ideal for windows to be in shaded areas to avoid overheating.
- Be mindful of overhanging branches and growth of foliage – avoid placing your log cabin in a location that will make garden maintenance difficult.
- If you need to connect your log cabin to utilities such as water and electricity, this needs serious consideration in terms of its positioning to avoid problems further down the line.
How to choose the right log cabin base
As log cabins tend to be heavier than other garden buildings such as sheds, a wooden base generally isn’t an option. While a paving slab base might suffice for a smaller cabin, concrete represents the most robust choice. You can find out more about your options in our log cabin guide. Also check out our base building tips.
How to construct a log cabin
Once you’ve prepared the base, you can construct your log cabin yourself, or you can opt for our installation service and have a team of professionals take care of it. If you decide on the DIY route, bear in mind it’s a two-person job. However, it’s possible to get it all done in a day. You’ll need the following:
- Rubber mallet
- Hammer
- Tape measure
- Spirit level
- Saw
- Electric drill
- Screwdriver
- Wrench
- Ladder
Then you’re ready for the job. Building your log cabin is a step-by-step process, which involves:
- Laying the bearers and base logs
- Fitting the wall logs, windows and door frames
- Installing roof joists
- Adding decking and roof boards
- Laying the floorboards
- Hanging the door
- Fitting storm braces
- Laying roof felt and adding finishing boards
You can read about all these steps in more detail in our guide to building a log cabin.
