Garden sheds from our collections here at Waltons are ideal for a huge array of uses. From garden storage to workshops, hobby rooms, and more, our range includes both traditional wooden sheds, maintenance-free plastic sheds, and extra-secure metal storage units. Investing in a shed is an exciting purchase but also one that deserves some thought. To help make the process easier, our shed buying guide gives you all the info you need to make the best decision to suit your needs.
How to site your garden shed
Before making any purchase, it’s important to consider where in your garden you’re going to erect your shed. Make sure the plot you choose has enough space around it for good air circulation and to allow for effective shed and/or garden maintenance. Your site must provide a level platform on which to build a suitable base. For small sheds, a wooden base is fine – either build your own or purchase one from us as an add-on. For larger units, a paving slab or concrete base is the way to go – for more information on this, our guide to building a shed base is essential reading.
Wooden Sheds
Wooden sheds are the most traditional garden buildings designed and built using tried and tested construction techniques. Here at Waltons, our offering includes both overlap and shiplap sheds and provides a choice of materials for floors and roofs, plus roof coverings. We also supply sheds with single or double doors, gable end or side entrances and allow you to choose where you have your windows. Again, depending on which shed you opt for, you’ll also have a selection of glazing materials and styles from which to choose. Whatever your budget, you’ll find a wooden shed which meets your requirements, and you’ll get a 10-year anti-rot guarantee as standard.
Metal Sheds
If it’s an ultra-tough, maintenance-free, high-security shed you’re looking for, take a look at our collection of metal sheds. Fabricated from Bluescope steel panels which snap together using the proprietary Snap-Tite system, these sheds are guaranteed against rust and corrosion for 30 years, and, when you opt for the ground tethering system, can withstand winds of up to 147 mph. With both pent and apex roof constructions to choose from, as well as a choice of coloured coatings, metal sheds from Waltons are a serious proposition for anyone looking for secure storage and great value for money.
Potting Sheds
Potting sheds from Waltons offer the same combination of a 10-year anti-rot guarantee, sustainable and certified timber construction, and UK manufacture, which sets all our sheds apart from our competitors. Our potting sheds are available in a choice of styles, from a 6 x 3 ft Victorian grow-house with opening roof vents to a roomy 8 x 6 ft potting shed with large lean-to styrene panes and an opening window for ventilation to a stunning 8 x 8 ft shiplap shed/potting shed combo.
Cheap Sheds
When we talk about cheap sheds, here at Waltons, we mean sheds which offer excellent value for money without compromising on quality. We still use sustainable and certified timber, offer a 10-year anti-rot guarantee, and your shed will still be manufactured to a high standard at our factory here in the UK.
Ready Painted Sheds
Ready-painted sheds from Waltons feature your choice from our range of four beautiful, garden-friendly colours. All you need to do is choose your favourite hue as an add-on when you purchase your Waltons shed, and we’ll apply the coating – fully opaque, high-durability paint which offers protection from UV damage, mould, and fungus – at our manufacturing facility. Why not let us take the hassle out of painting your new shed and give you a head start on the regular maintenance that helps your shed to last and last.

Shed Maintenance
Vital for ensuring the longevity of your shed and to maintain your 10-year anti-rot guarantee; for all our wooden sheds, we recommend annual treatment with a quality wood treatment. At the same time, it’s also a good idea to check your roof for rips or tears in the mineral felt and to make sure doors, windows and wall panels are watertight and free from damage. It’s always so much better to tackle any issues right away rather than letting them become bigger problems in the future. Check out our shed maintenance guide for loads of tips on shed care.
Planning Permission for Sheds
We design all our sheds and garden buildings with panning regulations very much in mind, so it’s unlikely you’ll need specific permission to erect one of our sheds. That said, there are some basic rules you must adhere to, and if you live in a listed property, other legislation may apply. Your best bet is to check our planning permission for sheds guide before making your purchase, and if there’s any doubt, contact your local planning department for advice.

Garden shed questions
Do I need planning permission for a shed?
Sheds are normally considered to be ‘permitted development’ and so don’t require planning permission to erect. That said, there are a number of rules determining how big your shed can be and where you can locate it. For example, the apex of the roof of a shed or garden building cannot exceed 2.5m, its overall size cannot constitute more than half the total outdoor space within the boundary of your property, and you’re not normally permitted to build a shed in your front garden without permission. If your building is listed, further restrictions apply. If you’re at all unsure, check with local planners before going ahead with your erection.
What base do I need for a shed?
For smaller sheds up to 10’x8’ in size, a wooden base provides a sufficient platform to keep the structure clear of the ground and stop it from distorting. For larger sheds, you need a more substantial base constructed from paving slabs or concrete. Either option is within the capabilities of a competent DIYer but can equally be undertaken by your local builder. For detailed instructions on building a shed base, please read our comprehensive guide, which provides step-by-step instructions to help you build a suitable foundation for your shed.
How to insulate a garden shed?
Insulating a garden shed begins with a basic solution in the form of bubble wrap. Simple to install using only a pair of scissors and a staple gun, it’s a good option for a quick fix. For more effective ways to keep the heat in and the cold and damp out, consider foil-backed bubble wrap, polystyrene, rock or sheep’s wool, or for a truly snug garden shed, install PIR board – Celotex or Kingspan – and board over the top using tongue-and-groove pine, plywood, or plasterboard.
Can I put a shed in my front garden?
If you intend to erect a shed in your front garden, you need to check with local planners before going ahead. That’s because although building a garden shed falls within the remit of so-called ‘permitted development’, this only applies when it’s located to the rear of your property.
How to get wifi in a garden shed
For a permanently reliable wifi link from your home to your shed, consider running an ethernet cable alongside your power cable in the same trench or conduit. Other methods of getting wifi to your shed include moving your existing wifi router closer to your shed, using plug-in wifi boosters or a powerline adapter which sends the wifi signal through your electric cable. If you have a decent phone signal in your shed, mobile tethering may be a realistic option.
