How to Create a Multifunctional Space in your Garden Building

Creating a multifunctional space in your garden room isn’t as hard as it seems! Across our showsite we’ve created several multifunctional spaces whether it be a team room / knitting nook or a yoga room / lounge area. The key is in the preparation, having a clear idea of what areas you want your garden building to be and then having a plan in place to actualise those ideas. In this guide we’ll discuss some helpful tricks to create multifunctional spaces in your garden buildings and some examples of two functions that we think mix together great.

A Garden Building that Suits

Although all of our garden buildings have the capacity to serve many different purposes. With even our most compact garden buildings, designed to smoothly fit into any garden, able to have a varied interior with different sections for different activities and pursuits. However, some of our garden buildings are just more naturally suited for a multifunctional area than others and here are some of our personal favourites.

At the bottom of your garden you have a gym, a music room and a library; the best part is they’re all in the same log cabin. Designed with an L-shape configuration the 6 x 6m Redwing Premium Log Cabin is a prime example of this natural inclination towards becoming a multifunctional space that some garden buildings exhibit. With three rooms behind locking doors and a vastness of windows all of which open to allow a nice summer breeze into either your gym or library. One of our bespoke log cabins, the 44mm interlocking tongue and groove walls will stand strong for years to come.

Creating a natural divide with a central gable The Goldcrest 5m x 3m Log Cabin subtly splits in two allowing for this divide to either be ignored in favour of a large single area or to be embraced by having two different areas to enjoy. Facing out to the large double glazed windows a lounging area with sofas and tea sets and then further into the cabin a peaceful work station, whether it be working from home or putting in the hours for a passion project.

Lastly the Harlow 5m x 3m Premium Insulated Garden Room with Oak UPVC is another garden building ideal for a multifunctional space. The overall design is crafted to optimise available space, perfectly nestling into the corners of your garden, offering panoramic views of your favourite outdoor space from every angle.

How to Create a Multifunctional Space?

As we said earlier, creating a multifunctional space in your garden building is about planning what you want and where you want it. Even in the largest of garden buildings like our Harlow 6m x 4m Premium Insulated Garden Room with Oak UPVC you’ll need to have a plan in place for how to maximise the space. It must be true, it rhymes. What functions do you want your garden building to achieve? Whiskey Shed? Yoga studio? Meeting office? The purpose needs to be clearly set out before you start placing items down. Once you’ve got your main areas sorted then you need to start dividing the space accordingly.

Certain areas might take priority and be a little larger and others might be resigned to a corner keeping it out of the way but still achieving its desired purpose. All of these things can be sorted out and when you begin placing anything down.

Some Great Ideas for Multifunctional Spaces

Yoga Studio and Lounge Area

A perfect blend for tranquillity, serenity and inner peace. At one side of this Log Cabin are a set of pastel coloured gym gear such as bands, dumbbells and kettlebells and at the other an L shaped sofa surrounded by windows. This is one of our favourite blends as they are both so symbiotic of each other, the peaceful work of Yoga and exercise and then a space beside it to further relax.

Library and Dining Room

Another wonderful blend, nothing makes a dining room look more full of life than walls and walls of bookshelves and then thousands of books on those bookshelves. A common layout for this blend is more of a unique one rather than two distinct sections on the left and the right for this layout favours having the perimeter being focused on the library elements and the internal area the dining. With bookshelves scattered wherever there's space and then a small side table next to a comfy armchair for reading late at night. All on the outside surrounding a rustic dining table and chairs set.

Gym and Pub

A more odd mix of two functions but there is definitely a link between the two. After a long hard workout you can pop to the other end of your garden building and have a nice cold pint. Ideal for a garden building with multiple rooms just to keep everything very separate, but even with just the end of the foam floor signifying the end of the gym and the start of your new pub these two functions can live together in harmony. These two functions, although at opposite ends of the spectrum, offer something that the other doesn’t. A chance to work hard and progress forward in the gym and then to relax and socialise in the pub after.

Multifunctional Spaces in Garden Buildings

Whether it be a yoga studio and lounge area or even a gym and pub creating a multifunctional space in your garden building is all about planning the area out and knowing what you want the space to be. Before anything is placed down think about what you want the space to be and how much of the space you want it to take up.
