How to Properly Store Christmas Decorations

How to Properly Store Christmas Decorations

Once the Christmas season is done it once again becomes time to start packing away all the baubles, tinsel and lights but the problem is the same as last year, how to store them all nice and neat. Rather than throwing them in a pile in the garage or tossing them into the darkness of the attic consider clearing out a dedicated space for Christmas decorations. And if you don’t have enough space to store all your decorations don’t worry, here at Waltons we condone in the strongest possible terms throwing out Christmas decorations. Instead we suggest getting one of our multipurpose garden buildings.

What have you got to store?

Sorting out what you need to store away is the most important thing to do first. No point clearing out an area only to find out you could have gotten away with less space or even worse turns out you need more. So just getting a rough idea of how many items you have is the first step in storing them all in a neat and tidy way. Consider separating them into big single items and then small items that’ll do better stored in a box alongside other similar sized items.

Getting the space sorted

Once you know how much you need to store away, you can get the space sorted for it all. If you can clear a dedicated space inside your home for it all to be tucked away for most of the year then that’s great. But unfortunately that’s often not the case and with Christmas decorations you go big or go home. Or alternatively, go to your Waltons garden building and store them away till Mariah Carey defrosts next year.

Some Garden Building suggestions from the Pros

Which garden building to get is often the question. For this kind of purpose we’d recommend a dedicated shed or if you want the building to have a multifunctional quality then you might want to consider a summer house or log cabin with a side shed. Here are our picks.

12 x 6 Premium Shiplap Pent Shed

This premium shed is a great addition to any garden as it’s large enough to store both gardening supplies and any Christmas decorations. Its bright interior features Styrene opening windows and easy-access double doors. Crafted from durable shiplap cladding with tongue and groove roof and flooring, it ensures a dry, robust space for heavy items or workshop use. Built with thick internal framing, this shed guarantees lasting sturdiness and reliability.

11 x 7 Premium Corner Summerhouse with Side Shed

The Waltons 11 x 7 Corner Summerhouse with Side Shed combines relaxation and practicality. Its clever corner design maximizes garden space, offering a bright summerhouse with panoramic views and a handy side storage area. A durable tongue and groove roof and floor, it ensures strength and weatherproof protection with heavy-duty mineral felt.

The 4.1m x 3m Robin Log Cabin with Side Shed

A timber log cabin with pent roof, large windows and double doors and side shed being used as a music room

The 4.1m x 3m Robin Log Cabin with Side Shed offers a versatile garden retreat, perfect as a relaxing hideaway and Christmas storage solution. Its Alpine-inspired apex roof and bright, double-glazed windows create a timeless, airy design. Double doors and opening windows allow natural light and fresh air to flow, enhancing comfort. Another garden building with a side sheds means a clean separation between its storage use and the relaxation area.

Packing the Christmas Decorations Away

Now you’ve either cleared out a space or gotten your new Waltons Garden Building all set up, it’s time to store your decorations. As we said earlier it’s a good idea to separate your items into single storage with no need to pack them away and smaller items that would do better within a box or bag. Large storage boxes from B&Q, Home Bargains or Dunelm can be a lifesaver when wanting a neat and organised Christmas storeroom but they can be expensive so alternatively any sort of box or bag (bin bags in a pinch) are good to clump together certain decorations and keep them stored.

Shelves without any Elves

The best thing about storing all of your Christmas supplies in boxes is that they are easily stackable and storing them on shelves means you won’t need to remove the four boxes on top to get to the fifth one on the bottom. Having your Christmas storage corner be even more organised with wall secured cabinets, makes it not only look nice but much more convenient for next year. We recommend some heavy duty garage shelves attached to both the floor and the wall for extra security. Keep the heavy items on the lower levels, to avoid lifting them over your head, then keep the lighter and single (unboxed) items at the higher levels.

Finishing Touches

Labelling the boxes even with something simple like “Christmas” means you’re not unloading your garden supplies in December, or going a step further with “Baubles”, “Tinsel” or “Lights”. Keeping all your Christmas decorations sorted is a gift you can give yourself now that you’ll open next year. So when you’re taking down the lights, be sure to take a few moments to think about the best way to keep it neatly organised for next year.
