As we come to the end of January it is time to start thinking about what to do with the upcoming growing season. Now is the ideal time to prepare your greenhouse for a successful 2025 of flowers, veg and fruits. In this guide we’ll go through what you should do and when in order to have the most successful growing year.
Don’t have a Greenhouse?
If you don’t have a greenhouse then you need not worry, Greenhouses are one of the garden buildings that we specialise in here at Waltons. So occasionally throughout this blog we’ll mention some of our favourite greenhouses which might serve as inspiration for which greenhouse to get.
Give your Greenhouse a clean
If you did a big clean before winter then some of these steps you're already one step ahead but either way giving your Greenhouse another general clean is always a good idea. Start by removing any plants that didn’t survive the winter or that won’t be flourishing again anytime soon, dropped leaves and loose twigs should always be put in the bin. Once cleared, check for any breaches or damage on both the exterior and interior and be sure to fix those before doing anything else.

Letting the Light into the Greenhouse
Properly cleaning the windows of your greenhouse are a must for creating a good environment year round for plant satisfaction. Using warm soapy water is normally all it takes to clean the glass of a greenhouse, but cleaning both the inside and the outside is very important. If the soapy water isn’t enough try combining white vinegar and water for an even more efficient cleaning solution.

Too soon to start planting?
Not at all! For certain plants such as carrots, tomatoes and herbs that take longer to truly flourish planting them now in small nursery pots and letting them begin their growing inside will mean when they’re ready they can be placed back into the greenhouse and be ready to reap alongside other plants. For other plants it will most likely be too soon to plant, especially within a greenhouse, but getting the seeds and bulbs ready is something to do earlier in the year as it helps visualise what you’re going to plant and how much of it.

Summer Around the Corner
With summer coming soon this is the perfect time to begin preparing your greenhouse for the growing season. Be sure to give it a deep clean to avoid critters crawling around your freshly planted crops and look inside and out for any damage or gaps that will need quick maintenance. After that look at getting mains power into your greenhouse in order to enhance the growing experience, such as automatic heaters and vent openers. Once your greenhouse is sorted, think about what plants you want to grow this year and get the bulbs and seeds ready now. Certain plants would do best being planted now and kept inside for the first few months but either way knowing what you’re going to plant means you can plan accordingly the space and time frame for each.
